IF YOU WITNESS A CRIME IN PROGRESS, OR FEEL THAT A SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY
MIGHT LEAD TO A CRIME BEING COMMITTED, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY.

 You Can Help Catch These Criminals
We’re asking for your help by becoming the “eyes and ears” of the Arson Task Force, and reporting any suspicious activities. In order to remember specific details, we suggest you write down the following information:
  • Make, model and color of vehicle(s)
  •  License plate number(s)
  • Physical description of any suspicious person(s) (height, weight, race, gender, age, clothing, etc)
  • Any other details you feel might be important
  • If you see anyone or anything you consider to be suspicious, including anyone boasting about having set fires in the past, report the information to the Arson Task Force immediately. Call the Arson Tip Hotline at 301-77-ARSON
  •  Make sure there is a working smoke detector in your home. If you are a DC homeowner and you need a smoke detector, call the Smoke Detector Give Away Program at (202) 727-1600 to obtain one for free.
  • Create and practice a fire escape plan with multiple ways to get out of your home. Plan a meeting place, like a neighbor's house, for family members outside of your home.
  • Take steps to discourage unwanted trespassers from targeting your home. These steps include:
    • Keep exterior lights on at night;
    • Clear brush or other objects away from the house that might conceal the presence of unwanted trespassers;
    • Turn on exterior lights and lights near the windows when you are away from home to give the impression you are home and awake.
    • Install motion-sensing lights that turn on whenever someone approaches your home.
